About Lottie Mayland

How Lottie Mayland Embroidery began…

This is a business that started during the early lockdown days of 2020 when, like many others, I found myself furloughed and retreating back to my childhood home in the countryside to live a much quieter life. My busy life in London was put on hold over night and I suddenly found myself with the time to embrace everything I’d always wanted to have a go at but never got round to trying. I started by buying a sewing machine and made a couple of cushions and some bunting using scraps of vintage linens and following YouTube tutorials.

We have always used proper cloth napkins for lunch and supper, however, as the lockdown days passed we quickly realised that the napkins we were using were all the same and we had no way to distinguish whose was whose. I decided to embroider our names and a little image onto 4 of them so we could identify our own. I created a bike, a fishing rod, a butterfly, and a pansy and therein my love for embroidery began. I ordered books, threads, watched countless YouTube videos, and ransacked my mum’s collection of vintage linen for fabrics to practice on. The more napkins, t-shirts, and fabrics I embroidered the more I loved it. I was inspired by my parent’s kitchen garden (hence the vegetable-themed napkins) and also by losing myself down countless Instagram rabbit holes looking at gorgeous vintage and modern embroidery styles.

Where we are now

Lockdown now seems a long time ago and I now live back in south-east London with my husband and baby. My collection now comprises sets of embroidered linen napkins and aprons, embroidered cotton t-shirts for children and adults, personalised baby blankets and bespoke, personalised embroidered artworks on vintage linen. I also embroider onto fabrics and items that people already own which is lovely way to up-cycle something old and give it a new lease of life. Everything I sell is made to order and can be personalised exactly as you’d like it.
